Act Prep

Getting ready to go to college can be a complicated and grueling process. With specific high school courses to take, grades to keep and college admissions tests to take there are many things that need to be done by your senior year in high school if you want to go to a good four year college. One important test that you will need to take is the ACT, usually administered in your junior year of high school this test is an aptitude test that measures how much you have learned in school. ACT prep usually consists of study guides either in book form, or thru a class or tutor.

It is important to know what to study if you are trying to prep for the ACT and that depends on knowing what the ACT consists of.  The exam consists of four sections - English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science. There is also a 30 minutes long writing test if the college you wish to go to requires it.

The English portion of the test consists of 75 questions and takes 45 minutes, it measures your written English and rhetorical skills. Mathematics is 60 questions that takes about 60 minutes and measures the math skills you have currently gained in high school. Reading is 40 questions in 35 minutes and measures your reading comprehension. Science the final required test section is 40 questions and 35 minutes long and measures your understanding and problem solving skills in natural sciences. The optional writing test is an addition 30 minutes at the end of your ACT. Prep will focus on your skills in these four areas.

There are many ACT prep online courses you can join, books you can buy, or classes you can take. Much of the information can be found on the internet for free but if you need more help as many do, you may want to consider getting help from a class. Classes can do much more than teach you facts and information. Classes can help you learn test taking strategies, and help you work on your vocabulary and grammar skills.

ACT prep classes will help you with your writing skills, and help you learn to love reading thus improving your reading comprehension. Prep classes can be done in a number of ways, you can attend workshops, 1 day clinics or private lessons. Each option has its advantages and will depend on what on you and what your individual needs are.

You can used ACT prep books as well and for many that is all the prep they ever have, but to use these books and sample tests you must be motivated and be able to learn easily and independently. If you are counting on the highest test scores possible then relying on books may not be the best choice.

ACT prep is an important part of your college plan and should not be left just to chance. These test scores are one of the first pieces of information the college you are applying to will see.
