College Prep

Getting ready for and getting accepted to the right college is a complicated procedure and because college is such a huge investment, it is very important to make the right choices. College prep starts early in high school, with choosing the right classes that your child will need for college admittance, taking the appropriate tests and fulfilling all the requirements. With so many decisions to make you may need a bit of guidance which can be obtained in a variety of ways, including with a company such as Score at the Top.

Soon as your child enters high school it is not too early for them to start their college prep, if they already know what they want to do and which school they want to go to you are ahead of the game, if not you have time to help them decide. Have them ask their school counselors what classes they will generally need for college admittance if they have a specific school or career in mind be sure to ask if there is any special college prep for that as well. Many fields of study or colleges for instance may look favorably on time in community service or working as an intern in the chosen field of study.

College prep tests start as early as the 9th grade and run thru your child's senior year, so it is important that they know which tests they will need for the types of schools they wish to apply for, whether they plan to apply for scholarships may also affect the tests they take. It may be a good idea to get a professional to help guide you on which tests your child needs and how to prepare for them. These tests are an important part of getting admitted so plenty of time and effort should be spent on them.

If your child has done their college prep carefully by the time they finish their junior year it will be time for them to start making applications to the colleges of their choice. Before they do though they should take the time to visit the colleges and weigh the different aspects of the school to see if this school is a good fit for them.

It is about more than just academics, there are many social and environmental facts that will be involved as well. While some colleges have weekends that allow students to visit their campus and interview with staff, this is not always the case and your child should be prepared to do the research on their own as a part of their college prep.

If you are counting on scholarships and financial aid for your child's education they will need to start applying for these after they have finished their junior year of high school.  Be sure to check deadlines on applications for colleges and scholarships because they all vary, and since these deadlines are non-negotiable it is important that you meet them. Consider it part of your college prep to check on the deadlines and requirements for all this paperwork, one missed deadline can sideline a college education.

With so much college prep to be done sometimes it can help to get a professional to help you understand all the rules, requirements and paperwork that you need to get thru to get your child in college. Score at the Top specializes in helping your sort thru the testing, application process, identifying the right college for your child, and coaching your child to present themselves effectively to their prospective college.
