The Most Effective Ways to Prepare for the SAT or ACT

Last Updated by Jason Robinovitz on June 3, 2019

The most effective way to prepare for the SAT (and the ACT, for that matter) is to start early because doing so opens up opportunities that diminish and disappear as time passes. An early start gives you time to take multiple SAT practice tests; identify areas of weakness and what, in particular, to study in order to improve; and to take multiple actual SATs (see below for why we suggest at least three) on a convenient schedule that’s unavailable to late-starters.

SAT vs ACT: Which Test Is Right For You?

Last Updated by Jason Robinovitz on April 24, 2019

It’s back…. The SAT, that is. For the first time in seven years, more students are taking the SAT than the ACT, a surge in popularity attributed to the SAT’s alignment with the Common Core and its last makeover to appear more like the ACT. Indeed, both tests share about 80% of content spanning the four major areas tested (math, science, reading, and writing). However, some key differences remain – as do questions about the importance and relevancy of college admission testing.

We're asked this question all the time, ultimately, it depends on where you're applying. The ACT Essay

Last Updated by Judi Robinovitz on May 26, 2015

Come September 12, the first ACT national test date of the academic year, those students who opt to take the essay portion of the exam will face something new. Of course, for those taking the exam for the very first time, there will be no change. But for students who have already taken the ACT before September 2015, the change will be noticeable.

Even with the changes, the ACT essay will still be OPTIONAL, because the ACT doesn’t require that students complete the Writing section, but most colleges will want to see an essay score. So it’s best if students check with admissions at the school(s) to which they plan to apply before deciding to skip the ACT’s essay.

ACT Testing Goes Virtual

Last Updated by Judi Robinovitz on May 8, 2013

The latest buzz-generating development in the world of college entrance examinations is that the makers of the ACT have announced that by the spring of 2015, the ACT exam will be administered via computer. The tech-challenged community can rest easy, however, as ACT, Inc. has promised that, at least initially, the paper-based exam will continue to be available. According to ACT Education Division President Jon Erickson, a determination has yet to be made regarding the question of whether or not students will have “the option to choose paper and pencil.” Mr. Erickson suggested that the company’s decision to change the test-taking medium has largely been driven by student interest.
