SAT/ACT Score Guarantees are a Marketing Trap

If you have high school-aged kids, you're probably inundated with Facebook and Instagram ads from test prep companies promising a 1500+ score, a 200-point jump–or a full refund. It's the same pitch every time, an SAT score guarantee wrapped in a money-back promise, engineered to feel risk-free. You either get the number or you get your money back, so what's the harm?

The harm is that the guarantee is the product. After more than 40 years in this business, and in regular conversation with the people who run the most respected test prep operations in the country, I can tell you that none of us believe these guarantees accurately reflect how test prep works in practice. They’re marketing tools first and educational promises second. The promise on the ad and the contract behind it are two different documents, neither written to protect you.

Start with what the research actually reveals about what a prep course can do. The most rigorous independent study of SAT coaching, Donald Powers and Donald Rock's analysis for Educational Testing Service, found average combined prep-course gains of roughly 20 to 30 points. The College Board's own long-standing guidance is that beyond the first 20 to 30 hours, additional coaching produces only minimal gains (we disagree with this assessment, but it's important to note, nonetheless). Even the rosiest figure anyone cites, the College Board's 2017 data linking 20 hours of Khan Academy practice to an average 115-point gain, is an average drawn from a self-selected group, with enormous variation underneath it. A guaranteed 200-point jump isn't the typical result of good prep. It's the rare tail of the distribution, sold to every parent as the expected outcome.

The money-back guarantee is engineered so almost no one collects

A guarantee is only as good as the conditions attached to it. If you read those conditions, the marketing collapses.

Kaplan's Higher Score Guarantee is a clinic in this. The word "higher" is doing almost all of the work. It doesn't promise a target score or a meaningful gain. It promises a score higher than your last one, even by a single point. Study for six months, move from a 1030 to a 1040, and you've gotten exactly what the guarantee promised. To even qualify for the refund path, you generally have to complete every assignment, sit for every required practice test, and attend every session before your deadline. Miss one task and eligibility evaporates on a technicality – I would estimate less than 5% of students are capable of completing every task.

The Princeton Review's "SAT 1400+ Guaranteed" program drew a public rebuke from the watchdog group Truth in Advertising for exactly this gap between headline and reality. The 1400+ promise only applied if your starting score was already 1250 or higher, a condition buried several clicks deep behind an asterisk. Consider what that excludes. When Truth in Advertising examined the program, the national average SAT score was around 1088, meaning most students who'd see that ad never qualified for the number on it. The group pointed out that this collides with the Federal Trade Commission's own standard: disclosures integral to a claim should not be hidden behind a hyperlink. To its credit, the company revised the marketing in late 2022. The episode is still the cleanest illustration of how these offers are built: the eligibility rules quietly do the disqualifying that the headline never admits to.

The bottom line: test prep guarantees are written for advertising, not for the sake of being honored.

Why a guarantee makes it easy to stop asking questions

If these offers don't survive ten minutes of reading, why do they work so well?

Because they're built to. A guarantee is reassuring by design. It takes the hardest part of any big decision, the uncertainty, and appears to lift it off your shoulders. When a number is promised and the risk seems to sit with the company instead of you, there's simply less that feels worth questioning. That isn't a failing of the parent reading the ad. The whole point is how the offer is written to attract.

South Florida has a well-known example of the same mechanism, and it has nothing to do with test prep. Scott Rothstein ran a $1.2 billion Ponzi scheme out of a Fort Lauderdale law firm before it collapsed in 2009. He sold investors confidential legal settlements promising guaranteed returns of at least 20% in months. The structure did the persuading: investors were told the deals were secret and that they couldn't examine the underlying agreements. The one document that would have prompted hard questions was the one they were never handed.

A score guarantee is a far smaller thing, but it borrows the same move. It leads with a clean, certain number and keeps the conditions that undo it out of view. The reassurance is loud and the fine print is faint, a design that only rewards exactly one habit: reading the whole document before you sign. With a prep contract, you're free to do that. Rothstein's investors weren't. You are.

What an honest test prep promise actually looks like

Start with the simplest filter there is. If a company guarantees a score, you've already learned the most important thing about them: they're willing to promise something no honest educator can.

Think about everything that sits between your child and a test result, none of which a tutor controls. Can you guarantee your child sleeps well the night before? Can you guarantee the relationship that doesn't end the week of the exam, the head cold that doesn't arrive, the wave of panic that won't erase a section's worth of points in the first ten minutes? A score is the product of one morning in a teenager's life, and a teenager's life is not a controlled experiment. Anyone selling certainty over that is selling you a feeling, not a fact. Certainty is the one thing standardized testing doesn't offer, so stop shopping for it.

Strike the guarantee off your list and ask better questions instead. The goal isn't the boldest promise. It's the company that's clearly good at the actual work. When you're evaluating a program, dig into these:

  • How do they train their staff? A tutor's degree tells you little. Ask what their training actually involves, how tutors are vetted, and how the company keeps them sharp.

  • What materials do they teach from? The strongest programs use real, released exams and practice built on the actual test. Be wary of anyone teaching from content they invented in-house to look proprietary.

  • How long have they been in business? Test prep is full of operations that appear for a cycle and vanish. Longevity means a track record you can check.

  • What do their reviews really say? Here's the pro tip: skip the star rating and read the worst reviews first, then watch how the company responded. A thoughtful reply to a hard review tells you more than fifty glowing ones. Then read the best reviews and ask whether they sound like real local families or like AI-generated copy written by someone halfway around the world. Reviews can be bought.

  • Do they measure progress? A serious program runs regular diagnostics and full-length simulations, so you can see movement, or the lack of it, well before test day.

  • What happens on the phone? Listen for whether they're reading a script or actually reacting to you, asking probing questions about your child to find the right preparation path. A company that prescribes before it diagnoses will do the same thing to your kid.

The thread running through all of it is the same. The best test prep companies build a program around the student in front of them, covering everything – from which sections to attack to how many times your child should sit the exam. A one-size-fits-all package reveals that the plan was decided before anyone met your child.
