Retrieval Practice: Why Quizzing Beats Rereading
Twenty years ago, two psychologists at Washington University in St. Louis ran an experiment that should have ended the highlighter industry. In 2006, Henry Roediger and Jeffrey Karpicke published "Test-Enhanced Learning" in Psychological Science, and the finding was blunt: students who were repeatedly quizzed on material remembered far more of it a week later than students who spent the same time rereading it. Not slightly more. Roughly 21 percentage points more.
Two decades later, most students still study the way the losing group did. They reread. They highlight. They "go over their notes." And then they walk into an exam and wonder where it all went.

The experiment: reading four times lost to reading once
Roediger and Karpicke's design was simple. College students read short passages, then studied them under different conditions. One group read a passage four separate times. Another read it once, then took three practice tests on it: no answer key, no feedback, just repeated attempts to pull the material out of memory.
Five minutes after studying, the rereaders looked like the winners. They scored higher on an immediate test, which is exactly why rereading feels so effective in the moment.
One week later, the picture inverted. The students who had been tested three times recalled about 61% of the material. The students who had read it four times recalled about 40%. The group that spent less total time with the passage, and never saw it again after a single reading, beat the group that pored over it repeatedly (Roediger & Karpicke, 2006, summarized in this peer-reviewed article).
Retrieving information from memory is not a measurement of learning. It is learning. Every time a student successfully pulls a fact or a formula out of their own head, that memory gets stronger and easier to reach the next time. Rereading never forces that retrieval, so the strengthening never happens.
Why rereading feels productive (and why that feeling lies)
Here's the detail from the research that every parent should know: the students in the rereading group predicted they would remember more than the testing group predicted. They were confident. They were also wrong.
Rereading creates fluency: the material starts to feel familiar, and familiarity masquerades as knowledge. A student rereads a chemistry chapter, recognizes every paragraph, and concludes they know it. But recognizing information on a page and producing it on a blank exam are entirely different cognitive acts. The exam only ever asks for the second one.
This is why "I studied for hours" and "I failed the test" show up in the same sentence so often. The student isn't lying about the hours. The hours just went into the wrong activity.

Since 2006, the "testing effect" has become one of the most consistently replicated findings in cognitive science:
A 2017 meta-analysis by Adesope and colleagues covering 272 independent comparisons found practice testing beat restudying by a large, reliable margin (g = 0.51), and beat doing no review at all by an even larger one (g = 0.93).
Karpicke and Blunt's 2011 study in *Science* found retrieval practice beat concept mapping (the darling of study-skills curricula) for 84% of students, even on tests requiring inference rather than rote recall.
A 2024 analysis spanning nine introductory STEM courses found a more mixed picture in real classrooms: spaced retrieval helped clearly in some courses and not in others, a reminder that how quizzing is implemented matters as much as whether it happens.
Two findings from this literature matter most for families. First, the advantage of quizzing over rereading grows as the gap before the exam lengthens: the further away the test, the more rereading fades and retrieval holds. Second, the effect extends beyond memorized facts to transfer and application, meaning students recall more and use what they recall more effectively.
If the goal of learning is remembering material weeks and months later, on the cumulative final rather than just Friday's quiz, retrieval practice isn't one option among many. It's the best-supported study techniques in the research.
What retrieval practice looks like inside a tutoring session
Plenty of tutoring is really supervised rereading: a tutor walks a student back through the material, the student nods along, everyone feels good, and nothing sticks. The session generates the same false fluency the research warns about, just with a friendlier face attached.
Our academic tutoring sessions are built to do the opposite. From the first meeting, tutors quiz relentlessly:
Sessions open with retrieval, not review. Before any new material, the tutor asks the student to reconstruct the last session's content from memory: a blank-page brain dump, not a walkthrough.
Explanations are followed immediately by production. The student re-teaches the concept back, works a problem cold, or answers questions without notes.
Quizzing is spaced and cumulative. Material from three weeks ago keeps resurfacing, because each successful retrieval after a delay strengthens memory more than ten passive reviews.
Errors are treated as data, not failure. A missed retrieval tells the tutor precisely what hasn't stuck yet, which is far more useful than a student's confident "yeah, I know that one."

This approach demands more from students than sitting through a review. Retrieval is effortful, and that effort is exactly what makes it work. How to use retrieval practice at home, starting this week
You don't need a laboratory to use retrieval practice. You need a blank sheet of paper and the discipline to keep the book closed:
Replace rereading with blank-page recall. After finishing a chapter, close it and write down everything you remember. Then open the book and check. The gaps you find are your actual study list.

Turn notes into questions. At the end of each class, write two or three quiz questions from the day's material. Answer them two days later, then a week later.
Parents: change the question you ask. Instead of "Did you study?", try "Quiz me on it." Have your student close the book and teach the material back to you. If they can't explain it without peeking, the studying isn't finished yet.
Take every practice test available. Old exams, chapter-end problems, released SAT sections. Under timed conditions, without notes, scored honestly.
Space it out. One retrieval session tonight, another Thursday, another next week beats three hours of cramming Sunday night, even if total time is identical.
